Rumors about a Disney theme park in Guanacaste turned out to be pure fairy tale.
It all started when Liberia’s Mayor Luis Gerardo Castañeda, announced on morning talk show “Buen Día” that the Disney Corporation had purchased land within the municipality with the intention of building a park.
By Wednesday afternoon, The Walt Disney Parks and Resorts press office had denied the claims.
When asked Mayor Castañeda why he originally announced the news, Castañeda blamed Teletica’s Edgar Silva for alerting him about the project. Silva said he originally saw the story Wednesday morning in the Liberia newspaper La Provincia, and called the mayor to ask if he would confirm the project on the air.
“About three months ago, I heard that there were investors interested in doing a park near the airport,” Silva told The Tico Times. “I called the mayor then and he denied that it was Disney. … I called the mayor again this morning and asked if it was Disney, he said yes and he accepted to go public with me.”
